What are Barre-Fit and Balle-Fit?
Ballet fit is a fusion method between ballet and aerobic fitness exercises. It is worth noting that nowadays it is also combined with pilates and yoga techniques. In addition, the fusion is present in all moments of the practice, both at the level of exercises and at the musical level, since during the session you can listen to songs by Mozart as well as Beyoncé.
Barre fit is a similar method that fuses ballet with yoga and pilates exercises. Its classes are mainly carried out with the help of a wooden bar, which is why it is called barre.
Where were these disciplines born?
Ballet fit comes from a fusion between the technical basis of ballet and fitness exercises that originated in the USA and Brazil. Since then there have been great promoters of this technique. In the United States, Mary Helen Bowers introduced it to the world of cinema using this training to prepare Natalie Portman for her role as a dancer in the film Black Swan. Shortly after in Spain, Gloria Morales, former dancer in the Víctor Ullare Ballet, will present this new technique. You can learn more about her philosophy in her book: “Ballet-fit: the method that will change your body”.
Barre fit was initially developed by a German ballet dancer living in London, Lotte Berk. Following a back injury, she decided to combine her dance routine with rehabilitation therapy, pilates and yoga, opening her first studio in 1959 in the basement of her house in London. Years later, in the USA, the term “barre fit” or “barre method” was definitively coined to refer to the fusion of these three disciplines.
