O que é maca?
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) ou também conhecida como ginseng peruano (embora não tenha nada a ver com ginseng) é uma planta que pertence à família das Brassicaceae, que cresce nos Andes centrais do Peru, acima dos 4.000 metros de altitude. São cultivados há mais de 2.000 anos e já foram descritas até treze variedades, sendo as mais estudadas a preta e a vermelha.
Seu formato é pequeno e achatado, sua raiz tuberculosa (é a parte comestível) parece um rabanete e sua cor é amarela, roxa ou amarela com faixas roxas.

Tipos de maca

Tomar uma colher de sopa de maca em pó desidratada (cerca de 10 g) será suficiente para obter 75% da quantidade diária recomendada de ferro, 4% de cálcio e 3% de magnésio. Para garantir uma boa assimilação do ferro, é melhor acompanhar a maca com frutas ricas em vitamina C.
Benefícios para a saúde
Antioxidante : Existem vários estudos que mostram que a maca tem poder antioxidante, ajudando a neutralizar os radicais livres (causadores, entre outras coisas, de cancro, doenças cardiovasculares e diabetes) presentes no sangue. (Zhaa et al., 2014; Yao et al.,2012).
Fertilidade: um dos maiores atributos da maca é que ela melhora a fertilidade. Estudos comprovaram que este alimento contém compostos com funções semelhantes às da testosterona nas atividades biológicas (Eddouks et al., 2005; Gonzales et al., 2002). Em 2001, foi obtido o primeiro relatório que mostrou o benefício da maca na melhoria da espermatogênese em ratos machos. Outros estudos subsequentes indicaram resultados semelhantes, mas embora existam dados que relacionem o desejo sexual, a fertilidade e a espermatogénese com o consumo de maca, não existem evidências científicas suficientes.
Desejo sexual : Nos últimos anos, vários pesquisadores se interessaram pelos benefícios dos alimentos para o tratamento da disfunção erétil, que é a incapacidade de manter uma ereção firme o suficiente para conseguir relações sexuais satisfatórias.
Foi realizado um estudo (Gonzales et al., 2002) em 56 homens saudáveis (21-56 anos de idade) no qual eles autoavaliaram subjetivamente o tratamento com maca durante 12 semanas; Posteriormente, o resultado mostrou um aumento no desejo sexual de até 42,2%, o que foi significativamente diferente do experimento aplicado com placebo. Isto foi confirmado por outro estudo (Kamohara et al. 2014), pois chegaram ao mesmo resultado ao fazer experiências com 14 homens.
Menopausa: desde a antiguidade, a maca tem sido usada para combater a anemia, problemas de infertilidade e desequilíbrio hormonal no corpo feminino (Hudson, 2008; Lee et al., 2011). Mas até agora, seus benefícios durante a menopausa não foram concluídos, pois estudos anteriores com resultados positivos não são confiáveis, pois não se conhece o tipo de maca utilizada, nem a dose que seria necessária para afirmar que a maca ajuda a neutralizar os sintomas da menopausa (Lee et al., 2011).
Energizante : durante duas semanas, foi realizado um estudo com 8 ciclistas masculinos experientes e treinados, aos quais foi administrado um suplemento de 2.000 mg/dia de extrato de maca. O objetivo foi investigar o efeito deste suplemento no desempenho de resistência e no desejo sexual, o que foi demonstrado (Spector et al., 1996; Stone et al., 2009).
