What are the stages of menopause?
This natural process has three stages: premenopause, perimenopause and postmenopause. Each of these phases has its own characteristics and challenges.
Premenopause
This is the period preceding menopause, when women still have regular menstrual cycles. During this stage, hormone levels begin to fluctuate, but the changes are generally subtle and many women do not experience significant symptoms at this stage.
Perimenopause
It is the transition to menopause and can begin several years before the last menstrual period; during this phase, estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate significantly, which can cause a variety of symptoms: irregular menstrual cycles , hot flashes and night sweats , mood swings , sleep problems . This phase can last from four to ten years and ends one year after the last menstrual period.
Postmenopause
It begins one year after the last menstrual period. During this phase, hormone levels stabilize at low levels, and many of the symptoms of perimenopause begin to subside. However, the drop in estrogen can increase the risk of certain health problems, such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, or urogenital problems .
