The United Nations organizes “World Environment Day” to promote awareness and action in favor of the environment throughout the world.

Since 1973, World Environment Day has been celebrated every year and has become a vital platform to promote progress on the environmental dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), more than 150 countries participate each year. Major companies, non-governmental organizations, communities, governments and celebrities around the world adopt the World Environment Day brand to champion environmental causes.

Our lands. Our future.

Ecosystems around the world are in danger. From forests and drylands to farmlands and lakes, the natural spaces on which humanity depends for its existence are reaching a point of no return.

According to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification , up to 40% of the planet's land areas are degraded, directly affecting half of the world's population. The number and duration of drought periods have increased by 29% since 2000, and if urgent action is not taken, droughts could affect more than three-quarters of the world's population by 2050.

For this reason, World Environment Day 2024 focuses on restoring land, halting desertification and strengthening resilience to drought under the theme “Our land. Our future. We are the #RestorationGeneration.” We cannot turn back time, but we can grow forests, revitalize water sources and restore soils. We are the generation that can make peace with the land.

Soil restoration is a key pillar of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) , which calls for the protection and revitalization of ecosystems worldwide, a key aspect to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals .

The year 2024 will mark the 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification. The 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be held in the Saudi capital Riyadh from 2 to 13 December 2024.
